Types of Beans

From black beans and pinto to adzuki and cranberry, our Canadian bean farmers sure know how to grow 'em! Check out all the different bean types Canada has to offer.

White Pea Beans

Also known as navy beans, most are exported to the UK for baked beans. Grown in: Ontario and Manitoba.

Black Turtle Beans

Also known as black beans or pretos, they are popular in Caribbean, Mexican and South American cuisine. Grown in: Ontario, Manitoba, Alberta, and Saskatchewan.

Dark Red Kidney Beans

These beans are great in soups, casseroles, chili and salads. Grown in: Ontario and Manitoba.

Light Red Kidney Beans

Their texture is perfect for salads, casseroles and Mexican-style recipes. Grown in: Ontario and Manitoba.

White Kidney Beans

Also known as cannellini or alubia beans and they make a perfect low-fat base for dips and spreads. Grown in: Ontario and Manitoba.

Pinto Beans

These beans have a creamy texture and are a staple in Mexican cuisines. Dry pinto beans have reddish brown speckles, but turn a solid deep pink colour when cooked. Did you know that "pinto" means "painted" in Spanish? Grown in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

Adzuki Beans

These small, sweet, nutty flavoured beans have been used for many centuries in Asian countries. Grown in: Ontario.

Great Northern Beans

These hardy beans thrive in cold temperatures but with their mild nutty flavour, they make a delicious addition to soups, salads, stews or baked bean dishes. Grown in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

Cranberry Beans

Known as romano or speckled sugar, cranberry beans are popular in Italian cuisine. Grown in: Ontario and Manitoba.

Bean Fast Facts

Beans are high in protein and fibre. High fibre diets have been associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular disease, colorectal cancer, and type 2 diabetes.

Canada actually grows 12 types of beans, three of which are exclusively exported - yellow beans, otebos, and small reds - meaning you won’t find them on your supermarket shelves!

Beans pack a punch! In a 1/2 cup serving, you get 9 grams of protein and fibre, plus high levels of iron, zinc, folate, magnesium and potassium.

Adding beans to your favourite recipes can help double the protein and fibre. Now that’s a win-win!

Canned beans are just as nutritious as dry. They are already cooked and ready to use, easy to add to any recipe!

Stored dry beans are best used within 1 year because they lose moisture over time and take longer to soak and cook.
